Things to note about Julchen’s death:
She died in her nightclothes.
She died with her eyes open.
And she died smiling.
Monika saw that flash of white and raced after it, only to find her sister crushed under a fallen piece of ceiling.
She wasn’t crying. No, when she saw Monika, her face lit up.
“Monika!” She had called, and said blonde dropped to her knees beside her. She was crying now.
Fighting tears in her remaining eye -the other had been taken out by a peice of glass-, she said in a soft voice, “Y-You’re still in your pajama’s…” she laughed weakly, before noticing that Julchen’s eyes had fallen glassy looking, and her chest wasn’t rising in heavy breaths.
Her mouth was in a small smile, and her hand was twisted in her sisters.
Even when the helpers came, Monika didn’t let go.
She didn’t stop crying either. Not until she realized her sister, the invincible Julchen Maria, was dead.
She went glassy eyed and dull after that. |
